The East Portland Fish Sanctuary protects 6km2 of critically sensitive coral reef, seagrass and mangrove habitats, that supports a number of fish, shellfish and bird species. The area consists of critical and ecologically sensitive coral reef, mangrove and seagrass habitat that provides protection from storm surge, refuge for a number of marine species and facilitates carbon sequestration. The MPA is in its infancy, only being recently established July 2016, however it is anticipated that there will be a spill-over effects of mature marine species into the adjacent bays. The MPA also represents the deepest in Jamaica, protecting 330 meters of reef shelf, and facilitating habitat connectivity between the deep and shallow reef habitats. More
